Injuries to the back can be very serious. The pet should be allowed to rest and recover. Avoid assertion and physical activity as those things will aggravate a back injury. In the house, avoid stairs and slippery floors, these can add to extra stresses on an already sore back.
If the animal has a hard time staying calm or settled you can try giving them Valerian Root Extract, this has a gentle and safe sedation effect.
For pain and inflammation, a Homeopathic called ‘Traumeel’ works well.
Your Vet may perscirbe other medications for pain and swelling such as Methocarbamol. Note that over the counter forms should NOT be used for pets as they have primary pain relievers added that are toxic to dogs.
Always seek the advice of a qualified Vet!

You can also consider a consultation with a vet who performs chiropractic or accupunture services.
