At 12.5 years the dog is really going to be set in his/her ways. Some things I have had luck with. Lavender is very calming and can be left in the same room as the pet. An article of clothing with your scent on it can provide great comfort while you are out. Never show excitement when you first see your dog upon return. Act cool and calm and say hello in a few minutes.
