Dog Coats
by Alice ~ February 8th, 2010. Filed under: Pet Clothing. We live in Canada and I am not too sure if I should be buying a coat for my 6 year old dog. Are there any guidelines for needing a coat depending on breed, length of hair or temperature?

I’m not sure if there is an official site for determining doggy coats and requirements, however, I would judge best by the amount of fur. Many breeds have good solid undercoats, such as Shelties and German Sheppards, Huskies are breeds meant for the cold and damp — and some smaller breeds have good undercoats as well, which are types of dogs that don’t really need a coat (other than to keep them dry and the owners less fuss) but dogs that have thin hair, thin long hair, or short fur such as pugs, boxers shitzu, maltese, bichons, yorkies should probably have coats, especially as the temps dip into the minus double digits – as. they really don’t have an undercoat to speak of. My Springer Spaniel, has a coat long enough to cover her entire back and hips, and many people have requested such coats from me, as I custom make them – to cover their entire backside, old hips and joints. Some of the shorter, off the shelf coats do not nearly cover as much, and, as I said, I’ve been making custom coats made to fit. My Sheltie does not need a coat, and loves rolling in the snow? wherever that might be this year? I have a rain coat for her, as the wet fur and messy cleanup after walks makes it necessary.
