What breed of dog should we get?

by Army Wife ~ February 6th, 2010. Filed under: Breed Questions.

We’re a military family and we move frequently. We have two children pre-teen/teen. We are wondering should we get a dog and if we do, what breeds should we consider getting?
Should we look at the SPCA? Thanks for any advice you can provide.

A dog shouldn’t be a problem as long as you are sure your new family member will be welcome where ever you move. That is usually a detail that can be worked out as many places are pet friendly.
I would consider a smaller breed such as a Jack Russell. Jack’s tend to adapt to new surroundings very easily and as long as their pack ‘family’ is around, they are happy. They are also great little sturdy dogs for teenagers and very smart. There are many other breeds that would be great for you, personally I’d stay in the working dog/ hunting dog classes. Keep in mind cost, smaller dogs eat less and also allergies as there are breeds that don’t shed. I would always recommend contacting a rescue or SPCA. There are some incredible souls looking for forever homes in both. Simply go to your local SPCA’s website or better yet go visit as some sites aren’t updated that regularly. You can also simple enter ‘Ontario dog rescue’ or ‘Jack Russell rescue Ontario’ in your search bar for example. http://www.canadasguidetodogs.com/onrescue.htm this is a great Ontario all breed rescue site!

Yes, I agree rescue organizations are a good place to start, there are many dogs in need of a Forever Family. But most importantly, please research the breed your interested in to find out which would fit into your family’s lifestyle the best. Many of the dogs that end up in rescue are surrendered by owners for various reasons: impulse purchase, given as a gift, allergies, home change, unexpected cost (vets/food/supplies), shedding, marking, barking, training issues, time consuming, unexpected adult size and “he/she’s not a cute little puppy anymore.”

This is not to discourage you from bringing one of the most loving additions you will ever find into your home, but to insure that you go into it with your eyes wide open and are well prepared to give your new family member a Forever Home. Good luck.

Thank you for your advice. I grew up with Foxies and I’m quite fond of terriers. My hubby wants a “dog he can run with”. I think a Jack Russell would wear my hubby out!

I will be checking into the local animal shelters to see what we can find.

Garlic is another example of a natural remedy and can sometimes be used in place of prescription drugs to treat heartworms in your dog. It is also very effective for repelling fleas and other known parasites. When using garlic to treat your cat or dog, always cook it thoroughly. Raw garlic can be harmful to your pet. I have a friend that has made cooked garlic a regular ingredient in her cats
