Poop

by Paris Rosenberg ~ April 5th, 2010. Filed under: Diet, General Dog Health.

How can I stop my puppy from eating her poop? She only eats her poop and only when it is fresh.
She will sneak off sometimes poop and eat it in a split second. Other wise I hover over her and pick it up immediately. I have tried the enzyme powder to make it bitter, I have sprayed listerene on it… She digests her food well and her weight is perfect. Sunny is 6 months now and has done this since I adopted her at 9 weeks old. Need some advice, thank you.

There are several reasons why a dog or puppy will ‘recycle’. 1) Nutritional deficiency because of an imbalance of digestive enzymes 2) A nutritional deficiency in the food. 3) Behavioural, they get attention when you stop them from doing it….even if it’s negative attention, it’s still attention.
I would suggest a food that has a protein source between 70- 80% total protein from animal sources only. If it’s dry food, soak it in warm water 30 minutes before feeding. Note that dogs that eat RAW or COOKED diets usually don’t recycle because they have a healthy balance of digestive Flora in the G.I. tract.
