I usually use the shorter lead (rather than the extend a lead) at night so I can keep my dog closer to me. You might also want to check out this product http://vedante.com/index.html. Any type of reflective item on your clothing and on your dog will increase your safety as well.

We are very warm here in the summer also and my dog, Solomon, is on the older side so we can only walk at night or very early in the morning. I use reflective tape on my walking gear. X marks the front and back. I’m trying to get a hold of the vest that the highway crews wear. They seem that they would show up rather well.
