Walking/Exercising My Dog

by John ~ June 5th, 2010. Filed under: Exercise.

I see a lot of people walking, or should I say running, their dogs while they are on their bikes or roller blades. I can’t believe that this is good for the dog, especially in the hot summer months. I don’t think there are too many breeds that should be running non stop for extended periods of time. Can you comment on this?

You are right! No breeds are meant to run for extended periods of time in the heat. I would suggest that people should only do this type of exercise when the sun is down and the temperatures are cooler.

We wait until late in the evening and then instead of running the dogs, we do some training exercises outdoors. Hot days are great for practicing sit, stay, down, come, heel, and even simple tricks in a fenced yard. Make sure you have lots of water for the pups.
