Dog Adjusting to Moving
by Gary ~ August 16th, 2011. Filed under: General Dog Health.I’m not sure if this is the place to ask these types of questions. If not, I would appreciate if you could direct me to a more appropriate forum.
I currently live in a house with 2 Labs. They were raised as mostly outdoor dogs but come inside in the evenings and sleep in their crates.
I’m in the process of moving and I’ll be moving to a 1 bedroom apartment. It’s a pretty decent sized apartment though. I have made sure the community has an area for me to take the dogs outside to play and I was lucky to find an apartment with a small fenced yard. I’m wondering how the dogs might handle this change in environment and if I’m doing a bad thing by putting them in a small environment. How can I help them adjust to the new place?

It’s important that they have familiarity to their new place. This can be done by making sure they have all their old toys, dog beds, etc. in the same type of set up. If their toys were in the living room, make sure their toys are put in the new living room. If the beds or crates were in the old bedroom, try to arrange them the same way in the new place at least until they consider the new place ‘home’. Remember, they want to feel that the new place is ‘their territory’. Their crates will likely become their safe place as they will feel at home in them.
As long as they get plenty of exercise outside, walks, leash free parks then the size of the yard or apartment is negligible.
