Crate Training

I am hoping to adopt a rescue dog in the near future and someone has lent me a crate. I’ve had dogs in the past (long time ago) but this will be my first time using a crate. Other than bedtime and when we have to go out without the dog, are there times the dog should be in her crate?

A create should be a safe haven for them so they don’t mind going into it so I would suggest you don’t use it for punishment. You can use it for bedtime or for when you go out. You might consider leaving them out of the crate at night time and only use it for when you go out and have to leave them on their own. A few favorite toys kept in the crate is also fun.

We like to keep her crated at night, because we have a cat and it’s the only chance she has to roam the house without worrying about the dog. We’re going to try crating her for short periods while we are home to get her used to being in it during the daytime, for when we have to leave her at home.
